Alexander Melyan is a video essayist and film researcher based in Yerevan, Armenia. His work focuses on the visual language, tracing unexpected connections between filmmakers, movements, and regional cinemas. He is particularly interested in how visual motifs, editing and framing choices reflect shared concerns or influences, even across different historical, temporal, and cultural contexts.
He has contributed to various media, such as Epress.am, EVN Report, and Boon TV, through different formats including articles, video essays, and podcasts. His video essays have been featured in Sight and Sound magazine’s list of the best video essays of 2019 and 2023, screened at the Golden Apricot International Film Festival as part of the opening ceremony and director masterclasses, and included in art exhibitions.
Since 2020, he has been a programmer at the GAIFF, and has served as a FIPRESCI jury member in festivals like Transilvania IFF, Hong Kong IFF, and Viennale.
